Objective

At the onset of the pandemic, Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts needed to ensure that the Applause Awards 2020 would still be accessible to family, friends, and industry supporters. For the safety of staff and students, the show needed to adhere to all CDC masking and social distancing guidelines and could not accommodate a live audience. Dr. Philips Center had never sought a prior production of the Applause Awards, so camera cues, graphics, and an editorial plan all would be developed from scratch. With the seed of an idea, they looked to Adrenaline's creative concept.

Working with the Adrenaline team to navigate the uncharted waters of how to create and produce art during a global pandemic proved to be the beginning of a blooming partnership. With every project that we work on alongside Adrenaline Films, we are provided with expertise and benefit from their passion for telling stories.

Solution

Adrenaline pitched a creative and technical vision of the Applause Awards 2020 that outlined execution from pre-production to post. With the collaboration of Dr. Phillips Center, the event was fully reimagined with remote viewing in mind. Careful blocking and camera direction worked to preserve the energy and character of the competition. In partnership with a team in New York, we incorporated a fully virtual host and implemented shoutouts from Broadway stars in New York City. The piece was accompanied by a behind-the-scenes featurette and trailer.
